Sam Bailey was crowned the winner of the tenth series of The X Factor UK on Saturday, receiving over one million votes from the public.
She was competing against 17-year-old Nicholas McDonald in the final, which was aired on ITV last night and lasted two hours, including performances from One Direction, Katy Perry and a duet from judge Gary Barlow and Sir Elton John.
Over the final this weekend, viewers saw Sam Bailey perform songs ‘Edge of Glory’, ‘And I Am Telling You’ (duet with Nicole Scherzinger), ‘The Power of Love’ and her winner’s single ‘Skyscraper’.
The 36-year-old mum of two is leaving her previous life as a prison guard behind as she- and the rest of the finalists- prepare to embark on the annual X Factor tour. However, Sam Bailey has received an extra bonus that no other X Factor winner has received before: she will get the chance to open for Beyoncé on her Ms. Carter tour next year.
It was revealed on The Xtra Factor that Sam won the public vote for eight out of the ten live shows this year. She is the first winner in the ‘Over 25s’ category since Steve Brookstein in the debut series of the show, and is also the first winner for judge Sharon Osbourne.
